What defines capitalism?

There is no uncontested checklist that makes an economy capitalist. For Geoffrey Hodgson, extensive employer–employee relations and an advanced credit system belong to the minimum institutional bundle. Karl Marx locates the capitalist’s increment beyond exchange, in the use of the worker’s purchased capacity to labor. Karl Polanyi distinguishes land, labor, and money from commodities produced for sale. These definitions overlap, but they ask different questions and should remain attributed rather than blended into a false consensus.

Which institutions work together?

Legal property differs from possession, and Hohfeld’s analysis separates several kinds of legal position. Employment gives an employer authority to direct work. Firms coordinate much of their internal activity administratively rather than through market transactions. In Hodgson’s account, capital records a transferable asset’s monetary valuation. His definition also treats a legal system supporting property and contract as necessary.

Why are markets not enough to define it?

Markets and paid labor existed long before the institutional transformation commonly associated with modern capitalism. Market exchange can coexist with ownership forms other than private ownership. Production for exchange does not by itself establish who owns productive assets. Calling every market arrangement capitalist would erase the very institutional differences the label is meant to help compare.

What do three bounded cases show?

Robert Brenner attributes England’s agrarian development to agrarian class relations, but other historians dispute his account. The Gold Coast cocoa boom began through African initiative and redirected resources already in use elsewhere. After 1978, Chinese enterprises received more discretion and new competitors appeared even though planning continued. The cases therefore provide different, bounded observations rather than a single origin sequence.

causal hypothesis

Robert Brenner attributes England’s agrarian development to its structure of agrarian class relations.

observation

The contributors to The Brenner Debate disagree about Brenner’s account of agrarian change.

observation

African producers initiated the Gold Coast cocoa take-off around 1890.

observation

Gold Coast cocoa exports expanded rapidly between about 1890 and 1936.

observation

China’s state-sector reforms after 1978 combined greater enterprise autonomy with continued planning.

observation

Township and village enterprises entered markets and competed with state-owned enterprises during China’s reform period.

observation

Naughton describes China’s 1978–1993 reforms as growing out of the plan rather than abolishing it at once.

What remains disputed?

Definitions disagree about which combination of institutions is necessary and about where capitalism begins historically. The Brenner debate contests Brenner’s explanation of agrarian change. Naughton presents the reform sequence as an incremental departure from planning rather than an immediate rupture. These disputes cannot be settled by assigning a timeless capitalist identity to a country.

How should capitalist institutions be compared?

Compare property and possession, authority in employment, coordination inside firms, finance, and market rules separately. Keep the comparison bounded to a specified place and period.

Which forms of business firm are necessary, characteristic, or incidental in rival definitions of capitalism?

The present evidence distinguishes coordination inside firms from market exchange but does not directly establish a capitalism–business-firm relationship.

    Evidence needed
Precisely located definitions and comparative institutional research that distinguish firm type, ownership, governance, employment, and legal personality.
    Scope
Named firm forms in attributed definitions and bounded cases; not every organization that produces goods or services.

How should definitions centered on wage labor classify capitalist firms and financial networks that depended on enslaved, indentured, or otherwise coerced labor?

Definitions centered on formally free wage labor do not by themselves reconcile scholarship on the simultaneous use of wage and coerced labor within connected production and financial systems.

    Evidence needed
Preselected enterprise, plantation, merchant, and financial records paired with independent histories that trace ownership, labor control, contracts, credit, and profits without treating coerced labor as external by definition.
    Scope
Named Atlantic production and finance networks between approximately 1780 and 1865; no inference that every capitalist enterprise used the same labor relation.

How do rival definitions relate capitalism to commodity production rather than to market exchange alone?

The present evidence distinguishes production for exchange from ownership and establishes that markets predate modern capitalism, but it does not directly establish a capitalism–commodity-production relationship.

    Evidence needed
Precisely located rival definitions that state whether commodity production is necessary, sufficient, characteristic, or historically variable within capitalism.
    Scope
Attributed definitions and bounded historical applications; not an inference from the presence of trade alone.

  4. counterargument / open

Which unpaid household and care arrangements materially sustained wage labor in selected capitalist economies, and how did law and policy distribute that work?

The institutional account separates households from firms but does not measure how unpaid work enabled employment or how those dependencies varied by gender, race, class, citizenship, and family law.

    Evidence needed
Time-use data, household and labor law, social-policy records, employer practices, and historically bounded feminist political-economy research for named populations and periods.
    Scope
Selected economies and periods chosen before comparison; not a claim that one household form or gender division is universal.
