CASES / EVIDENCE IN CONTEXT

A place is not a system. A period is not forever.

Cases preserve the institutional setting in which claims were observed. Episodes keep materially different arrangements from collapsing into a country label.

South Carolina's 1868 constitution removed race, color, and former enslavement as bars to the vote for male citizens aged twenty-one or older, with residence and other exclusions. The convention rejected a motion to include women. Black South Carolinians then held governing office under those rules. Named testimony, federal enforcement records, and the contested 1876–1877 transfer show how coercion and control constrained that practice without proving that constitutional rights or Black political activity ended on one date.

Tawantinsuyu was a rapidly expanding Andean empire centered on Cusco, not a timeless communal society or an early version of a modern ideology. Location: Tawantinsuyu

    Zapatista autonomy in Chiapas, 1994–present

From 2003 through 2023, Zapatista support-base communities in parts of Chiapas used regional Good Government Councils seated in caracoles alongside autonomous municipal government, while the EZLN remained a distinct political-military organization. The arrangement belongs first in the history of Indigenous autonomy, and the 2023 successor design remains too lightly observed to establish how it works in practice.

    Location: Zapatista regions of Chiapas

These guides connect cases and evidence without treating a place or period as a complete political system.
